Welcome! Bedroom Redesign

I wanted to start "Redesigning My World" a while ago, in fact this blog has been sitting empty since January of 2012.  I've done plenty of redesigning in my life, but not until now have I been excited about creating things that will make my life easier and prettier.  What changed?  The biggest thing, my boyfriend moved in with me and now we have enough things to fill two apartments!  That's right I live in an apartment.  Anyone that has ever rented knows the difficulty in making things "your own" when you're not allowed to paint, change cupboards, remodel, etc.  I initially wanted this blog to focus on decorating and organizing an apartment.  I have realized though that I want to redesign my whole life including redesign my hair, makeup, clothes, and MORE!  There are so many things I've learned in my 30 years on earth (wait that sounds like I came from Mars or something) 30 years of life.  So, without further ado, let's dive right in and see what needs to be redesigned today!

The biggest problem area in our apartment, since Joe moved in is the bedroom.  I feel like my bedroom should be a place of retreat, I don't want it to be cluttered and I don't want to have to "clean" it every night before bed.  If there are things all over the floor I have a hard time sleeping.  As embarrassed as I am to say this, I've been sleeping on the living room floor the last few nights for two reasons: 1. I don't want to clean my bedroom and it's messy enough that I don't want to go in there.  2. It's cooling off here in MN but with the windows open and the ceiling fan going, the living room is the coolest place.  Yes, I could turn on the air conditioner, but I'm trying to save money for something special...more on that later.

Enough hesitating, here is what it looks like right now. :(

Unfortunately most of the clothes you see on the floor are clean.  So, the first thing to do was get everything off the floor.  Most of it made it onto the bed, but at least now I can vacuum and move things around.

While I was picking up everything off the floor I cleaned off the bed side table and the dresser.  The dresser has become a catch all for things because it is right by the door.  My plan is to move it away from the door so hopefully, fingers crossed, it doesn't become a cluttered mess again.

The next step was dusting everything and vacuuming.  I swear this apartment attracts dust, I could dust every week and I'd still be dusting a 1/4" off everything.

The next part is always the hardest (especially if you're doing it by yourself), but it's my favorite part...moving the furniture.  Since the room is so small, I had move everything together meaning I had to move everything just a little at time and "dance" them around the room.

Once I had everything in place, it was the boring part...hanging up and putting away my clean clothes.  I don't have much room for clothes so I dread trying to get things to fit.  I'm trying to figure out better organization for my dresser and closet, but I will save that for another day.

I know, I know...the quilts on the bed don't match.  The one on the end of the bed was made by my grandmother and I sleep with it every night, it is so soft and fluffy.  The one covering the bed is one of my own quilt design.  I designed it for Kaelly Studio, you can read about it on their blog HERE and you can download it for free HERE.  I'm not sure that it is going to work with the decor I have planned for the room, but for now it works.  And yes, the pillowcases are all mismatched...I'm working on that.  I love sewing themed and seasonal pillowcases, sometimes they don't get switched just washed and put back on.  I promise I will try to be better about this.  Also, you're probably thinking "that green table doesn't match".  Well, that is Joe's table and he REALLY wanted it next to his side of the bed.  I compromised and said that he could have the table in the bedroom if we put his bed in the guest room instead of mine (mine is softer, his is harder).  If we're going to live together compromise is key.

I'm pleased with the new arrangement of the room.  I feel like I have some space for decorations which I will share here soon.  There are some other things that I need to/would like to do in the room.
        1.  I need a ladder so I can fix the curtains.
        2.  I need the ladder to also hang the quilt (you can see sitting on the dresser) up on the wall.  I can't paint in this apartment so I have found that hanging quilts really changes the look of the room and is a great way to display them.
        3.  I need to find something to hang on the wall behind the bed.  I would love to do some sort of head board but we will see how adventurous I decide to get in my bedroom redesign.

I hope you enjoyed my very first redesign.  I'm tackling the kitchen tomorrow....YIKES!  That's all I have to say.
